Wait... Fire Alarms Expire? I Didn’t Know That!
Over the past two weeks, I’ve had two customers ask me to change the batteries in their fire alarms. Simple job, right? Well, that’s what I thought—until I flipped them over and checked the dates. One was from 2002, the other from 2006. That’s right—these alarms were older than Facebook, the iPhone, and probably some of my tools!
So, here’s the big question: Why do fire alarms have a best-before date, and why should you replace them before they start qualifying as antiques?
Fire Alarms: They Don’t Last Forever!
Just like food has a "best before" date, fire alarms do too. Most last around 10 years, after which the internal sensors start to degrade. Even if they still beep when you press the test button, they might not detect smoke properly—which defeats the whole purpose.
Here’s why fire alarms have an expiration date:
- Dust & Dirt Build-Up – Over time, dust, grease, and debris can clog the sensors, making them less effective.
- Sensor Degradation – The internal components wear out, meaning the alarm may not respond as quickly (or at all) in an emergency.
- Battery Corrosion – Even if the battery is replaced, old alarms can develop internal corrosion, causing failures.
If your smoke alarm is over 10 years old, it’s time to upgrade to a new one.
How to Check If Your Fire Alarm is Expired
Look for a Date – Flip the alarm over and check for a best before date or manufacturing date—you’ll usually find it printed on the back or inside the battery compartment. If it’s over 10 years old, it’s time for a replacement. Fire alarms don’t last forever; their sensors degrade over time, meaning they might not detect smoke or fire as effectively as they should. Even if the test button still beeps, that doesn’t guarantee the alarm will work properly in an actual emergency. Play it safe—if your alarm is pushing double digits, it’s time to swap it out!
